There are two main types of solar energy systems. One is solar electric and the other is solar thermal.

Solar electric systems consist of two main components. The first is the solar array, which is a group of solar panels that produce electricity from captured solar energy.  Solar electric panels produce electricity in the form of direct current (DC). To be useful in your home this DC power must to be converted into alternating current (AC). This is accomplished by using a special device called an inverter. The really great thing about solar electric energy is that when the solar electric system is producing more energy than the home is using, the utility meter will spin backwards as the excess energy being produced is fed back into the utility grid. This can eliminate your entire utility bill.
